NameSmash 2010 Year In Review

From the successful launch of IDNs to Google’s battle with China to the approval of .XXX, 2010 was a year marked by progress. We might not have flying cars, robot butlers or crops that thrive on Gatorade but we do have Twitter weddings.

January

  • Cybersquatting fell to a three year low
  • Google threatened to leave China

February

  • China tightens rules for domain owners
  • Afilias bought Dot Mobi
  • ICANN warns that the adoption of IPV6 is essential
  • The .CO launch is announced

March

  • The Adult Industry Association announces it doesn’t want .XXX
  • The first IDN ccTLD requests completed fast track string evaluations
  • Google and China continue to butt-heads
  • The ICANN board kills the idea of an Expression of Interest Program

April

  • IDN ccTLD for Jordan successfully passes string evaluation
  • A Twitter proposal led to a Twitter wedding

May

  • The first IDN ccTLD’s become available
  • ICANN approves the .zhongguo TLD for China

June

  • ICANN board says yes to .XXX
  • The KSK key was generated
  • The DAG 4 was posted for review

July

  • A teen trades a cell phone for a Porsche
  • Warnings amass that the Internet will run out of addresses in one year

August

  • ICANN was on the hunt for a candidate for a seat on the board
  • “Sexting” makes it into The Wall Street Journal

September

  • Hebrew domain names announced
  • The ICANN Board met in Trondheim Norway to discuss new gTLD issues
  • ICANN received a proposal from the Arab Center for Domain Name Dispute Resolution (ACDR) to be recognized as one of the official dispute resolution providers under the UDRP

October

  • ICANN and UNESCO begin working together on the implementation of IDN ccTLDs
  • ICANN published the new gTLD budget
  • sex.com changed hands yet again

November

  • ICANN releases the Proposed Final New gTLD Guide Book
  • The US Supreme Court rejected Tiffany trademark appeal vs. EBay
  • Vertical Integration between Registrars and Registries is announced

December

  • The FCC Net Neutrality ruling is announced
  • Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2010
  • New gTLDs are delayed again pending the resolution of standing issues
