“Doppelganger Domains”

Posted September 12th, 2011

As reported by Wired.com, via GoldsteinReport.com: “Domain typo‐squatting is commonly used to spread malware to users whom accidentally misspell a legitimate domain in their web browser. 1 A new type of domain typo‐squatting takes advantage of an omission instead of a misspelling. A Doppelganger Domain is a domain spelled identical to a legitimate fully qualified domain name (FQDN) but missing the dot between host/subdomain and domain, to be used for malicious purposes. Doppelganger Domains have a potent impact via email as attackers could gather information such as trade secrets, user names and passwords, and other employee information.

Each company in the Fortune 500 was profiled for susceptibility to Doppelganger Domains and 151 companies (or 30%) were found to be susceptible. In large corporations, email usage is extremely high which dramatically increases the likelihood of mis‐sent emails and data leakage.”

“Judge Says Domain Name Loss Is Not A “Substantial Hardship”

Posted August 5th, 2011

As reported by Arstechnica.com: “A federal judge has rejected a petition by the Spanish company Puerto 80 for the return of the domain names Rojadirecta.com and Rojadirecta.org. The US federal government seized the domains earlier this year, arguing that they were primarily used to provide links to infringing sporting content.

Puerto 80 says that after weeks of playing phone tag with federal officials, it was told that it could only have the domain names back if it agreed not to “link to any U.S. content anywhere on its sites anywhere in the world.” Since this demand clearly exceeded what was required of it under copyright law (and arguably violated the First Amendment), Puerto sued for the return of the domain names.

Under federal law, the owner of seized property can seek its return if the government’s continuing to hold it would cause a “substantial hardship” to its owner. Puerto 80 pointed not only to the loss of traffic since the seizure, but also to the infringement of its First Amendment rights. It also pointed out that its activities had already been ruled legal by the Spanish courts.”

The Economic Times Predicts Trends and Future Directions Of The Domain Industry

Posted July 19th, 2011

As reported by Manish Dalal for  EconomicTimes.indiatimes.com: “The history of the domain name is intertwined with that of the growth of the Internet. The first .com domain name was registered in 1985 and it celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010. While the Internet came into existence nearly two decades before the first domain name was registered, this event is perhaps an inflexion point. This is because a domain name is assigned a unique IP address, which is made up of a long series of numbers that forms the basis of Internet communication and allows users to locate it on the Internet.

Given the dynamic nature of the Internet, new trends in the domain name industry are frequent. 2011 however, is expected to be a little different as it will be witness to some trends in the domain name industry which would perhaps be amongst the most significant since its inception. Read on to know more about these trends and future directions.”
