First New gTLDs Get the Green Light for Delegation

Today, the first four domains from ICANN’s New Generic Top-Level Domains Program were cleared to proceed to delegation. This marks the start of a measured roll out of new gTLDs, which are designed to expand opportunities for businesses, communities and Internet users around the world.

These first new gTLDs, or strings, are:

  • شبكة (xn--ngbc5azd) – the Arabic word for “Web” or “Network”
    Registry : International Domain Registry Pty. Ltd.
  • онлайн (xn--80asehdb) – Russian for “Online”
    Registry: Core Association
  • сайт (xn--80aswg) – Russian for “Web site”
    Registry: Core Association
  • 游戏 (xn--unup4y) – Chinese for “Game”
    Registry: Spring Fields, LLC

Japan Launches Prefecture-Type Domains

Japan is launching 47 new .jp extensions to coincide with the 47 Japanese prefectures (e.g. or The launch will proceed in three phases, a Sunrise, Landrush and General Availability.

During the Sunrise Phase, 16 July 2012 through 18 August 2012, trademark holders may register domain names exactly matching their trademarks. Only one domain name per trademarked term is allowed under each extension; registration under multiple extensions is allowed. International trademark holders are eligible, provided that the target area for the mark is limited to Japan.

Landrush will run from 17 September 2012 through 21 October 2012, and is open to any person or organization with an address in Japan – Com Laude can assist if required. Registrants may apply for any number of domain names. Multiple applications for the same name will be decided by drawing lots.

General Availability begins 19 November 2012. Registrations will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis under the same rules as regular general-use .jp registrations.

The third level (the term ‘domain’, in the example domains) may be registered in both ASCII and Japanese.

.РФ passes 900,000 Registration Mark

There are now more than 900,000 active  .РФ domain names,according to statistics on the Coordination Center for TLD RU,the .RU registry website . As of today there are 902,531 .РФ domain names registered and the number is increasingly rapidly .

A year and a half ago,on May 12,2010,the Coordination Center for TLD .RU became the administrator of the new cyrilic domain name .РФ . On November 11,2010 domain names registration in domain .РФ became accessible for all comers.

Implementation Notice – Version 3.0 of IDN Guidelines

As posted to “Following the ICANN Board’s acceptance at the October 2011 meeting in Dakar, Senegal, ICANN is today providing notice of implementation for version 3.0 of the Guidelines for Implementation of Internationalized Domain Names. The IDN Guidelines are a list of general standards that many top-level domain registries deploying IDNs are required to follow based on the Internationalized Domain Names for Applications (IDNA) protocol standard from the IETF.”

Interview With Tina Dam On Applying For IDNs

She is a strong votary of domain names in native languages. Heading the IDN (Internationalised Domain Names) programme at Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), she batted for Indian languages. She believes that lessons learnt in India in this regard may well help the world in democratising the web. In Hyderabad recently to attend the CDAC meeting on IDNs, she speaks on some pertinent aspects.”

Problems for Bulgarian IDN

As reported by “Bulgaria’s government is failing to facilitate the process for the introductionInternet domains in Cyrillic, Bulgarian Member of the European Parliament Ivaylo Kalfin declared after meeting the ICANN management in DC.

“The unwillingness of the Bulgarian government to provide arguments and to enter into a dialogue is an obstacle for the country and the EU as a whole for the registration of domains in Cyrillic,” said Kalfin, who was the Foreign Minister in the Stanishev Cabinet (2005-2009).”

Mainstream Media Stands Up and Takes Notice of Domain Space / Impending Changes Coming to Internet

The days of searching for a way to explain the domain name business to “civilian” friends and acquaintances are drawing to a close. The domain industry is starting to make “big” news.
Thanks to New gTLDs, IDNs and the depletion of IPv4, mainstream media is beginning to take a regular notice of what is happening in our niche. Recent articles in The Washington Post on New gTLDs and Yahoo News regarding IPv4 assure we will no longer will we scare people away at cocktail parties when they ask us what we do for a living.
