Japan Launches Prefecture-Type Domains

Posted August 8th, 2012

From our friends at Com Laude

Japan is launching 47 new .jp extensions to coincide with the 47 Japanese prefectures (e.g. name.tokyo.jp or name.osaka.jp). The launch will proceed in three phases, a Sunrise, Landrush and General Availability.

During the Sunrise Phase, 16 July 2012 through 18 August 2012, trademark holders may register domain names exactly matching their trademarks. Only one domain name per trademarked term is allowed under each extension; registration under multiple extensions is allowed. International trademark holders are eligible, provided that the target area for the mark is limited to Japan.

Landrush will run from 17 September 2012 through 21 October 2012, and is open to any person or organization with an address in Japan – Com Laude can assist if required. Registrants may apply for any number of domain names. Multiple applications for the same name will be decided by drawing lots.

General Availability begins 19 November 2012. Registrations will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis under the same rules as regular general-use .jp registrations.

The third level (the term ‘domain’, in the example domains) may be registered in both ASCII and Japanese.

Heading the IDN (Internationalised Domain Names) programme at Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), she batted for Indian languages. She believes that lessons learnt in India in this regard may well help the world in democratising the web.
