Interview: Garth Bruen and KnujOn

Posted November 10th, 2008

Garth Bruen is a man on a mission. His crusade: make the internet a safe, orderly place for businesses and consumers. Some might say he has a better chance tilting at windmills. But the man is determined. Touting three degrees – one in criminal justice from Northeastern University College of Criminal Justice, a Masters in public administration from the Suffolk University Sawyer School of Management and a software engineering certificate, also from Northeastern – Garth sees things from a vantage point that few can share. As purveyor of the website KnujOn.com (that’s “no junk” spelled backwards), he has taken up the unenviable task of filtering through all the spam you can send his way. Garth actually wants you to forward spam to his site. From there, he analyzes it and tries to figure out who’s behind it – and how policy can be used to stop it. Garth’s a very passionate man, and he has some pretty strong opinions. But keep your eye on him beyond this interview…he may just represent the future of enforcement on the web.

Never mind that none of the businesses which own the URL registrations are based in Kentucky.  The Washington Post quoted Bret Fausett, a domain name expert and attorney with the Los Angeles law firm Adorno, Yoss, Alvarado & Smith as stating, “This is a little bit like if the Home Shopping TV network was accused of fraud, and Kentucky decided to seize the show’s cameras and set even though HSN’s real location is nowhere near the state.”

PASSING THE SPAM BUCK -Why one report suggests registrars share the blame.

Posted June 17th, 2008

Nobody wants Spam in their inbox. Yet, there it is, making up as much as 80% of people’s email by some estimates. A lot of this ends up being filtered out by anti-spam software, but still you get bogus offers for  Viagra, Rolex watches and of course, porn links piling up. There’s a lot of finger-pointing going on as to who is responsible for the onslaught of free “Cialis” offers. First of all, there’s the spammers themselves. Then there’s ICANN, who many feel doesn’t do enough to enforce anti-spam policies. Security holes in operating systems – the list can go on and on. But what might a registrar have to do with any of this?
