7,000 Domains Won Through UDRP Have Expired

A study released today shows big costs to brand holders in getting domain names back via the Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). The study claims companies spent $220 million getting domains back in UDRP proceedings, and could have saved most of that had they proactively registered the domains and maintained registrations. The study also reports that approximately 4,000 domain names that were won during a UDRP proceeding and handed back to the trademark owner have lapsed and available for registration. An additional 3,000 names were won, lapsed and then re-registered.
